For information:-

The young Evan James had a lucky escape. Immediately after leaving the full rigged ship CARNEDD LLEWELYN she sailed for the Pacific Ocean. She was lost with all hands off the infamous Cape Horn in February 1908. As Mate of the VICTORIAN TRANSPORT he was less fortunate though. At Danzig at the beginning of the First World War, he suffered imprisonment for the full four years, mostly at Ruhleben camp.

Of fascinating note, there is a memorial in one of New Quay’s graveyards that categorically states that Evan James died on the CARNEDD LLEWELYN off the Horn!

For information:-

David Poulgrain commanded the King Line KING IDWAL throughout the Great War until sunk, probably by a German submarine laid mine in November 1917. Undeterred, he then took command of a brand new standard ship. He continued at sea through the 1920s and 1930s. In 1939 he was again sunk, this time on the motor ship KING EGBERT. Active in mercantile service until 1942, he again took civilian vessels to sea post 1945.
