For information:-

 

Later, a married man, Gwyilm Rees was serving as 2nd Engineer of the steamer PADDINGTON, of London, when torpedoed and sunk without warning by the German submarine U96 in the western approaches on 21st July 1917. He was one of 29 men killed in this attack.

From an Australian press report, it seems that the young engineer was killed in an accident on his way back to the Antipodes in 1915. This was probably aboard the Ellerman steamer BAROTSE.
