'Recommended for continuous good work in patrolling, both on the ordinary coastal patrol and latterly patrolling the net barrage. He has not actually been in action with an enemy submarine, but has shown great zeal, determination and good seamanship. A notable case being on the 18, 19 and 20 December, 1917, when, in most unfavourable weather, he removed and beached a derelict which had become a danger to navigation'.
