Examples of R.N. Casualty Records

Three in number, these massive indexes are a possible way of finding a way of finding ‘private men’ if known to have been serving between these dates until killed or otherwise ‘discharged dead’. If identified, with at least one ship and year (if surviving) their pay books and musters can be searched. The indexes themselves relate to claims by executors and next of kin for back pay of petty officers and private men and this paperwork is filed by the first letter of surname and the number immediately after individuals’ names (not the one after the date of discharge). There can be a number of civil records attached to these claims (and John Patrick’s mother’s claim is shown on the linked page).

This is one of a series of five volumes relating to 1854 to 1929. Apart from the external index, this volume is roughly alphabetically indexed by ships’ names at the front. It should be noted that this not only shows deaths, but also woundings. Similarly it covers the R.N., R.N.R., R.N.V.R. and R.N.A.S, as well as those in the Royal Naval Division (although the latter theoretically had been part of the army since 1916).

The entire series of 12 volumes runs between 1893 and 1956. The volume is indexed by ships’ names at the front, but as it is compiled in alphabetical order the index seems rather pointless!
