This is also roughly in alphabetical order. Apart from giving the date of when payments were first made by this charity, details of injuries and such like and ship’s names are also given, along with sums. It can be difficult finding particular men (as found in the payment registers), although this might just be for the latter years.

Although slightly out of the time frame that I normally deal with, a friend of mine showed me a photocopy of the following wound certificate, knowing that I would be interested. A most rare document, with some help I found out that the original is now held in Jersey. Through the courtesy of the Jersey Heritage Trust, they have given their blessing to this ‘facsimile’:-

These are to certify the Worshipful the Governours of ye Chest of Chatham for relief of hurt and wounded Seal Seamen, in His Majesty’s Service, That --- Phillip Billet - Seaman --- Aged about twenty five years was wounded on board .....His Majesty’s ship Victory --- by receiving ...... a fracture of the Radius of the right Arm, which occupies great Pain and Inflammation ---------------------------- ------------------------------------------- No. on the 7th of May in the year one Thousandseven Hundred and eighty --- being then actuallyupon His Majesty’s Service in afsisting to row offone of the Boats from the Shore ------- .................. To the truth whereof We certify thisTwelfth day of May 1780 ---
