Examples of Greenwich Hospital Schools’ Papers

Source: TNA: PRO: ADM 73/165 - Applications for those whose fathers were Captains and all ranks and rates below 1728-1870 - surnames beginning ‘Barn’ to ‘Barr’

These are applications for all the hospital schools in operation over the 18th and most of the 19th centuries. In total there are approximately 230 boxes. The documents are folded neatly, each application a separate entity, bundled together and tied. As far as I can determine all are in strict, or almost strict, alphabetical order. The nature of contents are personal to each, but normally there are forms along with correspondence as necessary and may contain other documentation, such as certificates of service and copies of civil registration documents.

This is one of two registers of girls admitted at the lower school between 1805 and 1840. The registers are externally indexed. Potentially, the information in entries can be detailed.

One of a series of three relating to boys’ entries to the Upper School, in total they stretch from 1815 to 1861. Apparently unindexed, in effect these are compiled by date of entry. So, unless one already has prior knowledge, searching for individuals can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, if found the information can be interesting. Also, it should be noted that the boys of merchant mariners were enrolled in this school.
