Examples of Pensions awarded by Greenwich Hospital for the Widows of Ratings

(and Marines)

This is one volume of a series of eleven running from 1882 to 1917 and is alphabetically indexed at the rear. There is some good information in these entries, but mostly deal with dates and amounts of payments. Also, please note that there are no First World War entries (the State having taken over provision of pensions for widows in 1911). And, although there is space for particulars to children, in this volume none are shown.

There is also a notation further down the page that would seem to indicate where payments were made. In this case it was ‘P.O. Portsmouth St James’ Rd’ (presumably to the Post Office).

Source: PRO: ADM 166/14 - ‘Claims’ 1911 to 1933 & 1949

Unlike the above that deals with the payment of pensions and payments, the two volumes that make up this series are registers of claims/requests. Theoretically the two volumes cover 1892 to 1933 and 1949. In reality after 1925 there are very few entries and then one single one in 1949. Alphabetically indexed at the rear it is a simple matter to check whether a claim was made.
