Commander
Oliver Maurice Fitzgerald Stokes R.N.
Recommendation
made by the Vice Admiral of the Dover Patrol.
‘In
command of M21 during several operations and bombardments of the Belgian Coast. When M21 struck mines off Ostend on the 20 October
1918, and was lost he did extremely well in his efforts to save the ship. I was
impressed with the conduct and cool bearing of Cdr. Stokes, when his ship was
in a sinking condition, being mined. He sat a fine example to his ship’s
company which had suffered several casualties’.
For this he was
awarded a Distinguished Service Order. Incidentally, he was the First
Lieutenant of H.M. Armed Merchant Cruiser OCEANIC
when she was lost accidentally off Foula in the
Shetlands in September 1914, although Lieut.-Cdr. Stokes had nothing materially
to do with this.
