This series was produced chronologically runs between 1780 and 1847, this example covering 1812-1819. Each chronological part is split into two volumes with the indexes being in the first. The indexes are in alphabetical and rank order of individuals.
Additionally (in ADM 11 69/1 at least) there are lists of officers promoted to flag rank; appointments of Commanders in Chief ; ‘Promiscuous’ (or miscellaneous) officer’s entries; and superannuated lieutenants (all in date order) before the main succession book.
The succession books are arranged by ships’ names and although generally in alphabetical order, it would seem that to save space some entries completely out of alphabetical order have been added later.
